Racing in Subic Bay

The triathletes from the Singapore Sports School plus, made their first official overseas race debut in Subic Bay, Philippines from 16th-17th May at the ITU Subic International Triathlon 2009. The race stretched across two days with the first consisting of the ITU Women's Elite & U23 events, together with the ITU Juniors, Age Group Sprint and 13-15 year old Mini-Sprint events. The second day was for the ITU Men's Elite & U23 races, age-group and team relay events.
Joy Phan took top spot in the Girls' Mini-Sprint event despite making a major error on the run course which cost her more than 4 minutes to her lead. Phan was out of the water together with Aina Farhama from Malaysia and had built a two minute gap on the bike into T2. She further widened the gap on the one lap run but missed the final turn into the finish shoot and exceeded it by almost 400m. Her timely turn around and effort back to the end point was a close shave of barely 23 seconds.

Samantha Ho finished 3rd in the ITU Junior categeory and with fellow team mates Lim Weiqiang (TP) and Joel Wong (SSP) finishing 10th and 12th respectively in the male event. Sumedha Lim and AQ Jilani finished 6th and 7th respectively in the Boys' Mini-Sprint event. Raphel Chew representing Singapore also finished on the podium in 3rd in the ITU Junior categeory.
